Do Children Need Car Seats in UK Taxis and Minibuses?

UK child car seat rules differ by vehicle and circumstance. For most car journeys, children need an appropriate seat until they are 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first. There are specific exceptions for taxis, private hire vehicles and minibuses, so avoid assuming that one rule applies to every journey.
Taxi and private hire exception
According to GOV.UK, when a suitable child seat is not available in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle, a child under three may travel unrestrained in the rear seat. A child aged three or over can travel in the rear using an adult seat belt. These are exceptions, not a reason to skip planning a suitable seat when you can arrange one.
Minibus rules need separate attention
The rules for minibuses depend on the vehicle and restraint provided. Check the official guidance for your situation and tell us the ages and sizes of children when booking so we can arrange the right vehicle and available seats.
