Are Taxis Required to Provide Child Car Seats in the UK?
No — under UK law, taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers are not legally required to carry or provide a child car seat. However, children must still travel safely, and the rules on what is required differ from ordinary cars.

If a taxi or minicab driver does not provide a child car seat, children can still travel — but only on a rear seat and under these conditions:
✔ Children aged 3 or older — must wear an adult seat belt
✔ Children under 3 — may travel without a seat belt
This is the legal exemption that applies specifically to taxis and private hire vehicles. It does NOT mean travelling without a seat is as safe as travelling with one — it simply means it is legal in a taxi when no seat is available.

Should You Use a Child Seat in a Taxi Even If It's Not Required?
Yes — absolutely. The legal exemption exists because taxis are often booked at short notice and drivers cannot always carry seats for every age group. It is not a recommendation to travel without one.

R44 vs R129 — Which Rules Apply to Your Child's Seat?
Much of the confusion around child seat law comes from the fact that two sets of regulations currently exist side by side.
R44 (the older standard) is weight-based, dividing seats into four groups from newborn to booster. Seats bought under R44 remain perfectly legal to use. However, from March 2017 backless booster cushions can no longer be sold for children under 22kg or shorter than 125cm — if your child needs a new seat in that range, a high-back booster is now required by law.
R129 / i-Size (the current standard, introduced 2013) uses height rather than weight for sizing, mandates rear-facing travel for all children under 15 months, and requires full side-impact protection testing on every seat. UK Child Car Seat Rules — Age, Height and Weight Guide
UK child seat law moved from a weight-based system to a height-based system in 2017 under the R129 (i-Size) regulations. The key rules are:
Under 15 months — must travel rear-facing at all times, in any vehicle including taxis where a seat is provided.
Under 40 kg or 135 cm — must use a child car seat in a car. The taxi exemption applies when no seat is available, but a seat should always be used when one can be provided.
Over 135 cm or 12 years old — can use an adult seat belt without a child seat.
The R129 (i-Size) standard goes further than the older R44 standard by:

What Are the Rules for Minibuses and Coaches?
The rules for minibuses differ from taxis:
Minibuses — children aged 3 or older must use a child car seat if one is available in the vehicle. If no child seat is fitted, they must use an adult seat belt. All children must travel in rear seats.
Coaches — children can travel without a child seat or seat belt if neither is available.

Who Fits the Child Seat — the Driver or the Parent?
Under our policy, the parent or guardian is responsible for fitting and securing the child in the seat. Your driver will provide the correct seat for the age group you selected at booking, clean and ready to use, but will not fit the seat themselves.
This is standard practice for private hire operators and is in line with legal guidance. A seat fitted by a parent who knows their child's height and weight is always safer than one fitted by a third party.
